Tips To Create An Inspirational Home Office

Creating the right environment to work from home is essential for our productivity and overall wellbeing. We may not have any option when it comes to the amount of space available for our home office, but there are still many things you can do to make it both functional and a pleasure to work in. Here are some ideas!

Have a dedicated space

Even if you do not have the luxury of a spare room to work in, it’s important to create some consistency in the location you work from, rather than drifting between areas of the house each time. This will make it easier for you to get straight into your work frame of mind at the beginning of each day.

If you are working from the corner of a room with other uses, think about ways you can create a zone for working in. for example, you might be able to position the furniture so that it screens off corner, and acts as a mental and physical barrier between you and the other functions of the room.

Consider your ergonomic comfort

You may decide to make do with whatever furniture you already have in the house for your workstation, but this will not necessarily be good for your spine. Chances are, you will be spending long hours in front of a screen, so it’s really important to have a chair which supports your spine properly, and a desk that is the correct height and free from clutter.

It might be tempting to work from the sofa if you have a laptop, but spending hours hunched over a screen will lead to back, shoulder, and neck strain. It is much better to attach your laptop to an external screen, or use a laptop stand to position you eyeline in the top third of the screen.

Have the correct lighting levels

Lighting levels can affect our mood, productivity, and physical wellbeing. If possible, choose a room with plenty of natural light, as exposure to sunlight helps regulate our moods by prompting the brain to release serotonin, which is associated with better levels of concentration and calmness.

Task lighting is also important to avoid eye strain and headaches. Invest in a good quality home desk lamp if you don’t already have one, and make sure that any overhead or background lights are not causing a harsh glare on your screen.

Arrange some storage space

Even the most determined paperless offices inevitably end up with a few documents and stationery items on the desk at some point. Have a dedicated shelf or drawer to keep your work-related items in, so that they can be neatly tucked out of sight when you are not working.

Add some finishing touches

While it is important to maximise your space and comfort, it is also important to create an aesthetically pleasing environment to promote a sense of calm and happiness. Adding some greenery provides visual interest and reminds us of the great outdoors. Some wall art that expresses our personality and boosts our mood can make a big difference too.
