Most couples start out by buying a double bed, whether because they want to snuggle up closely during the honeymoon phase of their relationship or because their first place together is not big enough to have a larger bed. But eventually, there comes a time when one or both of you wants to upgrade to a king-size bed, so how do you know when you’re ready to make the move?
One of the most popular times to purchase a bigger bed is when the family grows from two to three. Sleep can be a big struggle for pregnant women, not just because of their expanding size, but also due to increased body temperature and having to lie on their side, instead of their back.
Frustrated at the lack of sleep and needing more space to get comfortable, many couples head to furniture stores at this point to get a bigger bed so they can get more shut-eye.
Those who didn’t take the plunge during pregnancy might still be tempted to upgrade when the baby arrives. A study highlighted on HeySleepyBaby revealed 72 per cent of families co-sleep with their children, with the majority of these being couples who put their kids in their own cots but move them into their own bed when they wake up in the night.
In Sweden, this practice is particularly common, with some saying: “The child is a natural being who needs a safe environment in which to develop.”
At this point, trying to squeeze three or more people into a double bed can become a logistical nightmare, which is why the upgrade to a king-sized is necessary.
Even those who don’t have kids may want a larger sleeping space, as bumping into each other throughout the night can result in interrupted sleep and irritated couples.
